After returning from Dubai, I was interested in starting my own business, and I was offered a dealer Ship by a reputed manufacturer, manufacturing auto motive batteries. I was functioning as a partner. The returns were not accordance with, what we expected due to high competition, and the business was closed down.

Hamilton Designs International, Dubai.
A British owned company, in the business of interior decorations, air conditioning and warehousing. After the company, which I took on lease in Sri Lanka, was closed due to lack of orders I was unemployed for a period of 3 years. I was compelled to take up this offer due to financial problems and also the offer was handsome with US $ 1,500 pm + Accommodation + Transport. As I had my Diploma and previous experience with warehousing I got the appointment as a Store In charge attached to Joinery Factory, situated in D.I.P, Jabel Ali. I was performing my duties for 5 years and as the management changed and due to re-structuring of the company, the highly paid staff was retrenched

This factory consists of 60 sets Sewing machines, which I took on 01 years lease basis, but due to Lack of orders as a result of the new laws which were imposed by the USA quota restriction’s act I was compelled to handover back the factory to the owners.

Factory/Production Manager.
Asia Apparel Trading (Pte) Ltd, Sri Lanka.
This organization was involved in garments with a buying office and a manufacturing plant with a machine capacity of 250 machines and had a work force of 500 Sri Lankan Female and Male workers and a staff of 30.I was handling the production apart from my duties as factory manager and the entire staff and workers were directly under my control. As a result of the USA government quota restriction in year 2004, this factory and the buying house was closed down in year 2004, due to lack of orders.

Production Manager.
Light Style Garments Factory, Manama, Bahrain.
After leaving Continental Ready Garments factory, I was offered employment by the above company which I accepted. At the time of my joining the company, it had around 120 sewing machines and was totally disorganized and was submitting false production reports. The company was in debt due to mismanagement and low production. The factory was operating with male tailors and helpers from India, apart from the female Bahraini workers. I was the only Sri Lankan in the factory. I had to reorganize the entire setup introducing layout systems, use of folders and attachments, and target tracking systems. In order to achieve the daily target it was made compulsory for the workers to work overtime without payment. Within a very short period of time the factory was geared up for high production and as a result the owner, Who was a Bahraini national, started increasing the machine capacity, which finally climbed to 300 sets Industrial sewing machines with sophisticated machines such as auto welt pocket machine, auto surface type loop attaching machine, electronic bar tack machines etc. Left the company on completion of the contact and due to a personal matter.
08.1993 - 12.1995
Factory / Production Manager.
Continental Ready Garments Factory, Manama, Bahrain.
Manufacturing and exporting of garments, with a capacity of approx., 200 sets industrial sewing machines, mainly catering to USA market was a sister company of Atraco Dubai. The total work force was around 350 male and female workers from Sri Lanka (150) ,Bangladeshis (130), Bahrainis (75).This factory was closed down by the Bahraini owner, which was subsequently taken over by Atraco group. I, began operations of the factory and the washing plant and was mainly producing shirts, blouses, shorts and pants out of Denims, Twill and Corduroy to USA market. We were mainly handling buyers such as, Triburg International of Dubai (Gap, Old Navy), Wal-Mart and K-mart and Bill Blass (High quality executive checked shirts). The daily production was counted from end line and from poly bag, which is the cream of production. The target given to me was 4,000 pcs/day (100,000 pcs/month) which was achieved without much difficulty. Apart from my production responsibilities, I was requested to handle the workers camp and the facilities. I left the company on completion of the contract.

Production Manager.
Ready wear Group of Companies, Sri Lanka.
A large group of company with 21 readymade garment factories in Colombo and suburbs. I was appointed for the factory in Umbitchy place, Colombo 14, which had approx.150-180 sewing machines. The total staff strength was around 350 female machine operators and helpers. The factory was mainly producing Items for EEC countries which consists of shirts, blouses, pants, shorts, bath robes, night wear and jackets out of Satins, Gabardines, Spandex and Rayon materials. As the fabrics were of high quality and expensive, in order to avoid and minimize the rejections I was compelled to introduce high technical systems. When the factory was taken over by myself the daily production stood around 800 – 1,200 pcs for a day which was gradually and smartly increased to 3,500 – 4,000 pcs /day.

Hessing Garments Ltd. Sri Lanka.
Joined this company in the capacity as Production Executive (acting in the capacity as production manager), reporting directly to the Factory Manager. The factory was equipped with 350 sets industrial sewing machines and was manufacturing garments for Germany and USA. The items comprised of hospital uniforms for various staff’s and ladies high fashion 100% Rayon dresses for USA. I left the company as I was offered a higher position as production manager by Ready Wear Group with higher salary + company maintained car.

Rose Apparels (Pvt) Ltd,
A family concerned business and we started the factory with 22 sets industrial sewing machines, but due to the political disturbance in the country during 1987/89, the business was closed down.
10.1984 - 12.1986
Store keeper.
M. Samson Silva & Co (Pvt) Ltd, Sri Lanka.
Joined this company in the capacity as Store Keeper attached to the Readymade garments div, and apart from the readymade garments the company was involved in construction and transportation of fuel. The garments manufactured were exported to USA and EEC countries. During my period of employment, with the help of the Production Manager, I managed to learn the whole process of garment manufacturing and quality control methods with a sound technical knowledge, later which helped me to start up our own family business.

One of the pioneer engineering companies in the country. This was my 1st employment in my career and I was offered employment through, college when I was studying as I was a good sportsman. (To represent the company rugby team.) .Left the company to join a garment manufacturing concern, as it was the booming period of garment trade in Sri Lanka with the aim of rising up in career.
